FAQ

What actually is Jamaoke?

expand_less
expand_more

Jamaoke is a tech-enabled group activity that lets groups of 3-6 people perform well-known pop and rock songs as a band on real instruments - even if they have zero musical experience!

How does it work?

expand_less
expand_more

Each participant chooses their instrument and is assigned a tablet device. Beginners are shown colour coded graphics on screen, guiding them which notes to play. More experienced musicians can choose to see traditional notation instead.

To make things even easier for beginners, our talented team of songwriters have developed super simplified versions of your favourite tunes, meaning you'll only have to play one note at a time. Successfully playing these pared-down parts will unlock and trigger the more complicated original note combinations, meaning everyone can sound like a rockstar!

What's more, if you ever find it too easy, we can ramp up the difficulty level.

I’ve never played a musical instrument in my life, will I really be able to take part?

expand_less
expand_more

Yes! No matter your age or ability we’ll have you jamming along to your favourite songs on the first attempt. Using a colour coded system, complete beginners can easily see which note they need to play, and when to play it. Your Jamaoke facilitator will also be on hand to help should you get stuck.

What happens if I play a wrong note?

expand_less
expand_more

By default, if you play a wrong note then you’ll hear that wrong note. You’re playing a real instrument after all and we don’t want to make it too easy! But if you’re feeling anxious about this we can turn on our ‘Emergency Backing Track’ mode for you. In this mode, if we detect 5 wrong notes in a row then we’ll automatically switch out your part for a backing track until you play 5 correct notes in a row - at which point you’re back in control of the performance.

What instruments can I choose from

expand_less
expand_more

You’ll be able to choose from keytars, keyboards, synths and drums, and once you’ve chosen your instrument you’ll be able to select from a number of iconic sounds. Keyboard-based instruments include Grand Piano, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3 Organ, Wurlitzer, and Clavinet. Keytars can control a range of Guitar and Bass sounds - both acoustic and electric - and you can also apply effects such as distortion.

Our synth sounds are based on the legendary Oberheim OB-X, whilst we also have a wide range of orchestral samples.

What songs can we play?

expand_less
expand_more

As well as party playlist pop, we also have indie favourites, hard rock anthems, and classics from the 60s through to the present day. From ABBA to AC-DC, Bob Marley to Billie Eilish, there’s something for everyone.

We are growing our catalogue every day so please contact us for the latest list. You can also check out our social media feed to see some of the most recent additions.

I’m an experienced musician, will I find it too easy?

expand_less
expand_more

Beginners start at Level 1 which mostly requires just one note per bar to be played. Those with a little musical experience can jump straight to Level 2 or Level 3 where things start to become a little more difficult!

Whilst beginners will rely on our colour coding system, more experienced players can also switch off the colours and sight read the notation instead which adds additional challenge.

For those who are true pros, we can turn the computer assistance off entirely, and allow you to jam in freestyle mode.

Each player in the band can choose their difficulty level independently, meaning everyone can challenge themselves as much or as little as they like.

Is there singing involved?

expand_less
expand_more

We realise that not everybody likes to sing in front of others, so that’s why we’ve made it optional. For those that prefer not to sing we have high quality vocal backing tracks that you will play along to. This is a bit like the opposite of karaoke.

Of course, for those who are vocally inclined, we invite you to take the mic!

Can children take part?

expand_less
expand_more

Absolutely. From experience, we recommend that they are over the age of 7, but otherwise anybody can take part.

How many people can play at a time?

expand_less
expand_more

Up to six people can play at a time, and most songs are for between three to six people. That said, there’s nothing to stop you having extra people singing!

How long can we play for?

expand_less
expand_more

Our standard booking is for 2 x 60 minute sessions, however we can always tailor the timings to your needs.

How long each person gets on the instruments is up to you, but we recommend allowing each group to perform 2-3 songs.

What equipment do you provide?

expand_less
expand_more
We provide everything you’ll need for your Jamaoke session - including the instruments, tablets, and sound system. Please let us know if you have any additional specific requirements. For bigger events we can recommend extras such as staging and lighting.
What kind of spaces can you set up in?

expand_less
expand_more

If it’s somewhere a regular band could play, then it’s somewhere Jamaoke can set up too. As long as there’s power, we can be both indoors or outdoors (weather dependent). Unlike a real band we can also operate ‘silently’ - where each musician can play with their own set of headphones without disturbing any other activities that might be happening nearby.

Can we try more than one instrument?

expand_less
expand_more

Sure!

Are we able to record the performance?

expand_less
expand_more

We offer a free professional audio recording of each Jamaoke session! For an extra charge we offer a video service too. Please ask us about this when you make an enquiry.

Can we request songs that aren't in the catalogue?

expand_less
expand_more

For an additional charge we can create bespoke arrangements, as long as we have plenty of warning before the event. This is something to be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Can I bring my own instrument?

expand_less
expand_more

To ensure the smoothest possible running of our events we would advise sticking to the instruments provided by us. If you would like to use one of your own instruments then please be advised this can only be used in ‘freestyle’ mode - i.e. played normally without our tech assistance. Ordinarily we can amplify any instruments with a regular 1/4 inch jack connection such as electric guitars, basses and synths.

You can of course just jam along with any acoustic instruments too.

What Covid-19 precautions do you have in place?

expand_less
expand_more

We ask that all players use a hand sanitiser before playing our instruments, and our instruments and tablet screens also get sanitised between sessions.

In addition we provide disposable hygiene covers for our headphones and microphones. Players can also use their own headphones as long as they have a standard jack or mini jack connection. We are unable to use wireless or any other type of headphone as the latency is unsuitable for live performance.

Are we able to have a demo before booking?

expand_less
expand_more

Absolutely. If you’re interested in booking Jamaoke for your event please contact us and we can arrange to give you a demo at our studio in North London.

How do I make a booking?

expand_less
expand_more

Please use the contact page to send us your enquiry and we’ll get back to you ASAP.

What areas do you cover?

expand_less
expand_more

Although we’re based in London, we travel nationwide. Please note that locations further afield will incur additional travel costs. These will be confirmed with you before booking.

How long does a Jamaoke session last?

expand_less
expand_more

Our standard package is for 2 x 1 hour sets - similar to many function bands. It’s entirely up to you how long each guest gets to play for. We would recommend allowing each guest to perform 2-3 songs. This equates to roughly 30 guests per hour.

Bookings can be extended for an hourly flat fee.

Can you supply costumes?

expand_less
expand_more

Due to Covid-19 we are temporarily pausing costume supply, but we encourage guests to bring their own rock star accessories to look the part on stage!

If we still haven't answered your question, please contact us and we'll be delighted to assist further.
